Carl Brodnax

Instructor

Carl started playing tennis at 10 years old after finding a wooden racket in his grandfather’s basement. In 1997, Carl traded in his business suit for a warm-up suit. He was certified by the Professional Tennis Registry and began his tennis career as a volunteer instructor for the Girl Scouts tennis & fitness badge initiative in conjunction with the USTA. He continued to teach indoor tennis at Kings Highway Tennis of Darien.

Shortly after starting his next career teaching physical education, Carl continued his tennis instruction at Oak Hills Tennis Center in Norwalk while also teaching tennis after school with Norwalk Grassroots for their first 5 years. He spent the next two seasons as the Director of Tennis for the city of Norwalk. For the last 15 years, Carl has instructed for Horizons Student Enrichment tennis development program in New Canaan, which he founded and currently directs. In the Fall of 2016, Carl returned to Norwalk Grassroots Tennis and Stamford Youth Tennis Academy to lend a hand instructing, mentoring, and stringing rackets.

Carl has maintained his Red Cross certifications in Advanced First Aid, CPR, AED, and Lifeguard since 2003. In January, 2017, Carl received his certification as an Emergency Medical Technician. When not teaching or following the exploits of his three boys, Carl and his wife enjoy various forms of exercise, gardening, and live theatre. Coach Carl and his wife Stephanie live in Norwalk.
